The English Führer

"This is another page turning read from Rory Clements. "

Synopsis:

It is autumn 1945. The war is over and Professor Tom Wilde, erstwhile spy and now Professor of history at Cambridge University, is hoping that life will return to normal and he can enjoy family life again with his wife Lydia and son Johnny. But there are undercurrents of political unrest both from the extreme left and extreme right that are concerning those in the know at Whitehall.

An outbreak of the plague in a quiet country village leads to suspicions of a link between the Japanese research into biological weapons and the remnants of fascist groups in British society. Tom tries to contact a family friend in the endangered village and finds himself dragged into plots and counter plots being investigated by Lord Templeman, head of MI5 and respected colleague of Wilde in the war years.

Danger lies on every side and the opponents are ruthless, having learnt their trade under the Nazi regime. Even apparent friends are not to be trusted. Both strategic thought and quick thinking are needed to defeat the enemy.

Review:

This is another page turning read from Rory Clements. There is excitement in bounds, twists and turns right to the end and a cast of characters we care about. As always Clements’ research reveals facts about people and movements that can be quite astounding. He displays clearly the atmosphere at the beginning of the peace: the continuation of war privation, rationing and the suspicions that remain of strangers. There is optimism for the future but many obstacles remain to be overcome. Loved it.
